On scale invariance states of quantum spin chains (Vaughan Jones, Vanderbilt University)

Critical phenomena are supposed to be accompanied by locally scale invariant configurations. If this is taken too literally for a quantum spin chain it can prevent the existence of a continuum limit, but does yield models where the Thompson group of local scale transformations acts unitarily on the Hilbert space. And there are scale invariant transfer matrices and Hamiltonians whose expectation values in scale invariant states can be calculated. I will discuss these ideas and give the results of some calculations.
