Compatibility of International Humanitarian Law and Islamic Law: What are the Challenges for Humanitarian Practitioners?
18.10.2017 12:30 – 14:00
With armed conflicts taking place in many parts of the Muslim world arises the question of the compatibility of international humanitarian law (IHL) and Islamic law.
What are the areas of compatibility/incompatibility between international humanitarian law (IHL) and Islamic law, notably in relation to the protection of civilians, the prohibition against indiscriminate attacks, the protection of property or the treatment of prisoners of war? What are the challenges facing the application of certain classical Islamic rules on the use of force in modern armed conflicts? How to engage with Islamic armed non-state actors (ANSAs) on IHL?
