NCCR special seminar series: André Nadler

12.04.2018 16:30 – 17:30

André Nadler, Research Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics (Germany), will give a talk on “Quantitative lipid biochemistry in living cells” at UNIGE on April 12, 2018.

The Nadler lab is interested in lipid driven processes and combines organic chemistry, bioche-mistry and cell biology. The group aims at understanding why there are so many distinct lipid species, what their cellular roles are and how their distribution in the membrane influences cellular signaling cascades. To this end, the lab develops lipid biosensors, caged and photocrosslinkable lipids. These chemical biology tools allow quantifying the lipid-protein interactions and lipid dynamics in the membranes of living cells.

André Nadler is a synthetic chemist by training who initially worked on oligonucleotides and peptides in the group of Prof. Ulf Diederichsen in Göttingen. After joining the laboratory of Carsten Schultz at EMBL Heidelberg he began to venture into membrane biology, with a particular interest in the cellular role of lipids in signaling. Since December 2014 he leads the Membrane Chemical Biology group at the Max-Planck-Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics and was recently awarded an ERC starting grant. He firmly believes that the cellular roles of molecularly distinct lipid species can only be elucidated if quantitative lipid biochemistry in living cells becomes a reality.
