How to categorify the ring of integers with two inverted (Mikhail Khovanov, Columbia University)

11.10.2018 16:15

The category of vector spaces and linear maps can be viewed as a categorical lifting of the semiring of non-negative integers, via the dimension map. The category of chain complexes of vector spaces can similarly be interpreted as a categorical lifting (categorification) of the ring of integers, via the Euler characteristic of a complex. In this talk we'll discuss approaches to categorical liftings of rings Z[1/N] obtained from the ring Z of integers by inverting a positive number N and present such a lifting for N=2. The lecture is based on a joint work with Yin Tian.
