Some examples of singularities (Nicolas Hemelsoet, University of Geneva)

18.02.2019 17:00

Unlike manifolds, algebraic varieties may have singular points. Understanding these singularities is an important and fascinating problem. We will try to understand the situation for a curve or a surface. This will involves the work of many mathematicians, starting from Newton to Grothendieck. We will also observe multiple connexions with different areas of mathematics, for example low-dimensional topology or Lie theory.
If we have enough time, we will look at more advanced topics, for example Picard-Lefschetz theory and oscillating integrals.
