What does it mean to solve the sandpile model? (Mikhail Shkolnikov, IST Vienna)

I propose a series of new results, conjectures and problems that might be viewed as an approach to understanding the abelian sandpile model on the square lattice. In particular, we discuss functoriality of the sandpile group leading to the natural scale renormalization procedure, which potentially enables the computation of the critical exponents.
The talk is based on a work in progress with Moritz Lang.
