The Performance of Exporting Firms under Import Protection
21.05.2019 12:30 – 13:30
GENEVA TRADE AND DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP / ABSTRACT
This paper investigates the effect of import protection on export performance relying on firm-product-destination level data on Peruvian exporters (1993-2009). We exploit product-specific data on anti-dumping measures which we correlate with variation in export revenue, unit values, and quality across products and time within firms. Our results indicate that the effect of anti-dumping measures on export performance depends on the characteristics of countries on which import protection measures are imposed. In particular, Peruvian firms decrease export prices when anti-dumping measures are imposed on imports from other middle-income countries. In contrast, anti-dumping measures towards China are associated with increases in unit values among exporters. These effects are persistent over time and consistent with theoretical mechanisms studying the effect of trade protection on export performance.
