Philanthropy Lunch: "Water as a public good: Room for philanthropy"

11.12.2019 11:45 – 14:00

Inscription obligatoire- Evénement en anglais.

Water is a public good which manifests a variety of dimensions. It is an environmental, economic, social and cultural good that must be managed and protected accordingly. States, international organizations, the private sector, associations, foundations and local communities all have a role to play to protect water in times of peace as well as during and after armed conflicts. The role of non-state actors is often neglected in the management of water resources. However, codes of conduct and ethical standards, as well as commitments made in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, highlight the key contribution that non-state actors must make.

This event will address the role of water as a source of cooperation and inclusiveness at the domestic and international levels. How can the private sector, associations and foundations contribute to the governance of water resources? How can public-private partnerships such as the UN Global Compact strengthen water protection? Can the private sector play a role as peacebuilder after an armed conflict? These and other questions will be tackled.
