CANCELLATION - Social Connection and Organizational Responsibility
23.01.2020 12:00 – 13:00
MANAGEMENT BROWN BAG SEMINAR / SHORT ABSTRACT
Understanding, assessing and allocating responsibility for group endeavors has long presented difficulties for political philosophy and organizational ethics. Evaluating the extent of any given actor’s role in generating group outcomes (beneficial and harmful) as well as how the bounty and blame of those activities are to be distributed highlight shortcomings in current theorizing about responsibility. Still more nuanced, how should we think about members of these groups whose role is more passive, perhaps even limited to mere group membership or association. Recent structural innovations in global commerce have only added to the complexities of associational responsibility. The rise of outsourcing, sub-contracting, and mobile app-based platforms have restructured relationships between and among economic actors around the world. Recently, scholars have sought insight into these questions in Iris Marion Young’s “social connection” approach. Contrasting her approach with the “liability” approach, Young elaborates a model that emphasizes the justice of social structures, is forward-looking, and where responsibility is essentially shared. In this paper, we seek a deeper look at Young’s approach including its recent application to questions specific to business ethics. We detail the promise and limitations of a social connection approach for contributing to the perennial challenge of organizational responsibility in global commerce.
