Connecting scales in morphogenesis

22.10.2021 14:15 – 15:15

During biological development, the shaping, growth and patterning of tissues occur through the coordinated motion and information processing of thousands of cells. This raises the question of how the collective “macroscopic” behaviour at the scale of the tissue emerges from “microscopic” rules at the cellular level. Here I will explore this relationship during morphogenetic processes, notably cancerous tumour growth. I will discuss the relation between large-scale shape changes observed in developmental biology and the physics of active polar and nematic surfaces.
