Chaos and correlations in the black-hole Hilbert space

23.09.2022 14:15 – 15:15

I will describe a new approach to characterising the micro states of black holes, based on quantum chaotic correlations between individual energy levels. I will base my discussion on an effective field theoretic (EFT) description, based on a symmetry-breaking principle, which technically demonstrates the universality of the relevant structure of the black-hole Hilbert space. We will discuss the implications of this scenario for the unitarity of black hole evaporation and draw conceptual parallels to the modern understanding of quantum statistical physics, via random matrix theory and the so-called eigenstate thermalisation hypothesis
