Open Sampling in Behavioral Research
16.05.2019 12:00 – 13:00
MANAGEMENT BROWN BAG SEMINAR / ABSTRACT
A huge proportion of participants in behavioral science studies are recruited from “open sampling” services, such as MTurk and Prolific. These services can accelerate and democratize the production of scientific knowledge. They also allow researches to collect larger samples compared to traditional samples in behavioral research (e.g., undergraduate students). However, open sampling also poses unique challenges for experimental validity, and new questions about replicability. I will discuss and present evidence of some of the challenges inherent to open sampling. I will devote particular attention to participant non-naiveté, i.e., the tendency for participants to become knowledgeable about the research process and familiar with specific research paradigms.
