Steering Magnetic Spirals using Electric Fields: A New Magnetoelectric Response
Dr. Samuel MOODY, PSI, Center for Neutron and Muon Sciences
Magnetoelectric (ME) materials exhibit an inherent coupling between their magnetic and electric degrees of freedom, enabling us to control magnetism using electric fields. This functionality has attracted considerable interest for low-energy technologies, where electric-field manipulation of magnetism offers an efficient route towards sensing, memory, and information-processing applications. Conventionally, magnetoelectric coupling is known to orient ferromagnetic order orselect domain populations.
In this seminar, I will present the discovery of a new magnetoelectric phenomenon in the chiral magnetoelectric materialCu2OSeO3. Using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), we demonstrate that an applied electric field can effectively steer the propagation direction of an incommensurate magnetic spiral along well-defined trajectories. This behaviour, which we term the magnetoelectric deflection effect, presents a fundamentally new form of electric-field control over collective magnetic textures. I will discuss how the effect is observed in reciprocal space, the physical mechanisms responsible for its emergence, and how the interplay between ME coupling and magnetic anisotropy governs the resulting trajectories. Finally, I will outline possible future applications arising from electrically controlled magnetic deflection, including novel device concepts based on tunable magnetisation and polarization responses.
