A Bridge between Discrete and Continuous Linear Algebra (Parisa Mamooler, University of Geneva, Switzerland)

26.03.2018 17:00 – 18:00

Numerical linear algebra and functional analysis are two faces of the same subject. But, it could not be said that mathematicians have settled on a language and notation that blend the discrete and continuous worlds gracefully.
One of the fundamental ideas of linear algebra is matrix factorization, the representation of matrices as products of simpler matrices that may be, for example, triangular, tridiagonal, or orthogonal.
In this talk, we will see a description of the continuous analogues of matrix factorization. Moreover, we will become familiar with “Chebfun” software system in object-oriented MATLAB, which extends many MATLAB operations on vectors and matrices to functions and operators.
