Electrons on the Hat: graphene-like features, zero-modes, and topology
Adolfo Grushin (CNRS Grenoble)

The Hat tiling, discovered in March this year, is the culmination of decades of mathematical research in aperiodic tilings. Unlike other quasicrystals, such as the Penrose tiling, it requires only a single type of tile to be assembled, the hat tile. In this talk I will discuss the physics of electrons propagating on the Hat, focusing on similarities and differences compared to crystalline and quasicrystalline electronic properties. I will discuss how the electrons propagating in this tiling, with and without magnetic field, lie at the interface between crystals and quasicrystalline electronic properties, a direct consequence of its monotile nature. To conclude, I will discuss possible experimental realisations of this physics in state-of-the-art experiments.
