Emotions and emotional states in intimate relationships

Dominik Schoebi, University of Fribourg

Emotions play a crucial role in social relationships, as they are influenced by interpersonal experiences and, reciprocally, shape interpersonal interactions. This phenomenon becomes especially pronounced in relationships characterized by high interdependence, such as romantic partnerships, intimate relationships, or familial ties. In this presentation, I aim to elucidate key aspects of how emotional states and responses as relevant to close and intimate relationships, drawing on both past and current research from our lab. The studies will explore questions pertaining to interconnections between emotional responses and individual as well as interpersonal well-being over time, or how individual variation in emotional responsiveness are linked to one's relational experiences, intimate perceptions, and interpersonal interaction processes.
