The Axion-Electron Coupling: Prospects and Pitfalls

18.03.2024 16:00 – 17:00

Abstract: Most axion dark matter experiments search for the axion's coupling to photons, but the axion also acts directly on electrons, producing spin torques and spin-dependent forces. I will show several new ways to measure these effects. In particular, by considering how the axion's spin torque excites currents in magnetized media, one can probe far into unexplored parameter space at micro-eV masses. Time permitting, I will also explain why recent proposals to probe the axion-electron coupling through the electron EDM overestimate their sensitivity by many orders of magnitude, due to a subtlety in taking the nonrelativistic limit.
