Optical Investigation of Phonon Dynamics and Manipulation of its Fundamental Properties in Oxide Heterostructures

Dr. Inhyoek Choi

Quantized lattice degrees of freedom, phonons can interact with another degrees of freedom, i.e. electrons and spins, and are of critical importance in elucidating the fundamental physical properties and versatile correlated functionalities in crystalline solids. Meanwhile, the phononic properties and their coupling strength with another quasi-particle are usually innately determined as an intrinsic value for a given material. A recent advance in the thin film fabrication technology has provided a valuable opportunity for engineering phononic states via the strain engineering, the interface proximity effect, the interlayer coupling effect, and so on. In this presentation, I will demonstrate the manipulation of the dynamic coupling between phonons and another quasi-particle can be realized in artificially-designed oxide heterostructures, in particular a superlattice structure. Furthermore, I will share our several results about the observation of correlated phonon dynamics in the oxide heterostructures using ultrafast optical techniques, demonstrating the novel advantage of heterostructures.
