Researching and exhibiting the global/intimate in a multisensory fashion
12.12.2024 12:30 – 14:00
A Mexican surrogate mother tells us how much she would like to know about the baby she carried for a gay couple from Spain six months ago; a Spanish egg donor talks about the side effects of hormone stimulation on her mood; and a Moroccan seasonal worker in Huelva, Spain, complains about how pesticides on the plantations affect her cycle. How can we, as feminist scholars, empirically capture the intimate and reproductive experiences of these women in our research and tell their stories in a way that gives voice to their experiences? And how can we present the entanglements of their intimate experiences with global and national political and economic structures on a national scale to a broader public? Based on the teamwork of Carolin Schurr, Mirko Winkel, Laura Perler and Nora Komposch (University of Bern), this talk explores these questions by first revisiting the potential and limitations of creative and multi-sensory methods in geography. It then uses two exhibition projects to illustrate how research findings can be communicated to the public in a multi-sensory way. The conclusion discusses the potential of exhibitions as a c/artographic practice.
