Probing temperature-dependent phonon dynamics in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x with ultrafast electron diffraction
Chiara Missaglia, EPFL

Ultrafast Electron Diffraction (UED), a pump-probe technique, enables the study of lattice dynamics by analyzing electron diffraction patterns. It also allows to extract time and momentum-resolved information about phonon mode dynamics through diffuse scattering.

My thesis project aims at capturing diffuse scattering from the superconductor Bi₂Sr₂CaCu₂O₈₊ₓ (BSCCO 2212) for the first time, in a photoexcitation regime that preserves the superconducting state. We track diffraction pattern changes above and below the superconducting critical temperature, and observe different rates of decay of Bragg and superlattice peaks at different temperatures, suggesting modifications in lattice thermalization and electron-phonon interactions. Finally, preliminary data for the temperature-dependent thermal diffuse scattering will be shown.
