Microscopic characterization of intervalley scattering processes in solids by time-resolved electron diffraction and spectroscopy

Prof. Fabrizio Carbone
Laboratory for ultrafast microscopy and electron scattering (LUMES), EPFL, Lausanne

In this seminar, we will review some recent advances in femtosecond electron diffraction and spectroscopy that allow to simultaneously follow the faith of electron-hole pairs during their decay through a material’s band structure and the trail of collective excitations that they leave behind. We will use as examples photoexcited graphite and the High Tc superconductor Bi2212 and will dedicate some time to speculate on the perspectives of these methods and to describe a future project aiming at investigating pairing interactions in cuprates.
