Molecular Design of Quantum Materials: Emergent Properties in Metal–Organic Nets
Professor Dr. Kasper S. Pedersen, University of Denmark

Quantum materials exhibit exotic phenomena arising from the intricate interplay of electronic, magnetic, and lattice degrees of freedom. Most such materials are purely inorganic and synthesized under conditions where thermodynamic control dominates. Molecular chemistry, however, offers complementary tools for quantum materials discovery – enabling the design, synthesis, and understanding of systems with unique symmetries and electronic structures. Metal–ligand assemblies with variable or inseparable valence states (“non-innocence”) are widespread in coordination chemistry and provide a route to harness strong electron–electron correlations in extended networks. This represents a realistic strategy to challenge current state-of-the-art approaches to quantum materials. Using metal ion “building blocks” with predictable bonding as nodes, together with rigid molecular linkers, we demonstrate how to synthetically tailor network tessellations.

In this lecture, I will present our recent findings in the search for genuinely new symmetries and the resulting emergent properties, including metallicity, geometric frustration, valence tautomerism, and exceptionally strong magnetic correlations.
