Probing black hole perturbations from the algebraically special sector

26.11.2025 11:30 – 12:30

Studying perturbations of a black hole (BH) metric is an invaluable way of probing the properties of the BH. Indeed, using perturbative expansions, one can conclude about the stability of the BH; compute its quasi-normal modes (QNMs), which can be measured experimentally; one can also explore perturbatively the solution space of General Relativity (GR) around the BH. The perturbative analysis of BHs in GR is done mostly numerically, due to the complexity of the equations involved. In this talk, I will focus on algebraically special perturbations to the Schwarzschild and Kerr BHs: this subset of perturbations, that preserves the algebraic specialty of spacetime, plays a central role in identifying the symmetries that rule BH perturbations in GR. They are also the only subset of perturbations for which one can obtain analytical results. I will show how to obtain analytical predictions for amplitude factors of quadratic perturbations to the Schwarzschild BH along with the first analysis of linear perturbations to the Kerr BH purely from the metric point of view.
