Chiral phononics : Controlling materials with a twist
04.03.2026 13:00 – 14:00
Chiral phononics is an emerging field that utilizes the chirality and angular momentum of lattice vibrations to manipulate the properties of quantum materials. This has lead to intriguing discoveries of novel physical phenomena, including the generation of atomistic tesla-scale magnetic fields that promise unprecedented control of magnetic order. In this talk, I will provide an introduction to the field and then present our most recent predictions of novel phenomena arising from phonon chirality and angular momentum. Specifically, I will demonstrate (1) the generation of multiferroic polarization from coherently driven multiferron quasiparticles, and (2) novel transport phenomena including phonon polariton and phonon angular momentum Hall effects.
