Basic Notions: Pseudospectra (Bart Vandereycken, Genève)

19.05.2016 16:15

Eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a matrix need no introduction for any mathematics student. But what can be said about the set of eigenvalues of all its bounded perturbations? Pseudospectra offer a simple answer for certain nice classes of perturbations, like additive perturbations that are bounded in spectral norm. I will introduce these pseudospectra using elementary linear algebra, give some applications related to matrix powers and linear ODEs, show some pictures, and briefly explain how they can be computed efficiently.

This Basic Notions seminar will be followed by an apero.
