Toric degenerations and integrable systems, Part I (Frederik De Keersmaeker, Cornell)

07.03.2017 15:00 – 17:00

Mini-course plan:
-- Introduction, definitions, elementary examples of toric degenerations.
-- Toric degenerations of grassmannians and flag varieties: this is a nontrivial example that is fairly straightforward and we can do some explicit computations. It illustrates the concepts that show up in more complicated examples (grobner basis, straightening laws, standard polynomials).
-- The relationship between toric degenerations and Newton-Okounkov bodies, and generating integrable systems using toric degenerations. If time permits, I can explain how these techniques have been used recently to compute the Gromov width of flag varieties (by fitting simplices into Newton-Okounkov bodies).
