Counting lattice points and group actions (Alexander Gorodnik, University of Zurich)

12.05.2020 16:30

We discuss the problem of counting the number of lattice points contained in increasing domains of the Euclidean space. While this number is usually asymptotic to the volumes of the domains, the corresponding discrepancy is still mysterious, and is the subject of several conjectures. We will explain how to analyze the discrepancy using group actions, and show that that in some cases, the counting problem exhibits random behavior. This is a joint work Michael Bjorklund.
