From Euclidean sources to initial data and back again?

17.09.2020 14:00 – 15:00

A common way to prepare states in AdS/CFT is to perform the Euclidean path-integral with sources turned on for single-trace operators dual to bulk fields. Such states can be thought of as coherent states of the quantum gravitational theory and have been argued to be the CFT description of semi-classical spacetimes. In this talk, I will discuss the extent to which an arbitrary semi-classical spacetime can be obtained this way. I will show that in fact, only a small subset of geometries can be obtained by such a procedure and that typically, the Euclidean preparation of the state involves singularities in the bulk. Finally, I will speculate on the interpretation of these singularities in the microscopic theory.
