What’s the goal? What’s the way? Geography, political ecology, and sustainability
18.11.2021 12:30 – 14:00
How do disciplines and epistemic communities shape our approaches to research on environment-society challenges? What are the relative roles of empirics versus critical deconstruction, of dominant models versus analyses of dominance? This presentation will reflect on challenges in a current research project investigating the dynamic changes in Vietnam’s natural forests and exotic plantations, and place these challenges in the context of the historical and current relationship of geography and political ecology to pressing environmental questions. In doing so, it will touch on the history of Anglophone geography and its inconsistent record in contributing to environmental politics, the field of environmental studies, and environmental decision-making. The presentation will also reflect on the posture of political ecology with respect to other approaches to society-environment relations.
