Looking forward, looking back: valuing land commons for their biodiversity conservation

16.12.2021 12:30 – 14:00

What is the role of common lands in biodiversity conservation? New approaches from international conservation policy and practice seek to provide space for recognising how traditional land practices can be formally recognised for their biodiversity outcomes. These approaches are being used to help countries achieve their “post-2020” biodiversity targets to protect 30% of their lands and seas by 2030. While some countries will likely continue to create strict protected areas, others may recognise traditional land uses through these new approaches.
This presentation will use the cases of France and Gabon to explore these issues. In France, the “sections de commune”, an ancient land common more typically used for farming and the practice of affouage, are threatened to be abolished by a new law proposal, while at the same time, France has committed to respect local rights, cultural heritage and the biodiversity 2030 targets. It will then take the case of Gabon that seeks to extend its existing protected areas by 2030, and how this could potentially affect common lands and rightsholders surrounding these parks.
