How to solve a (simple) high school tiling problem using (way too advanced) group theory

19.10.2022 17:15

I'll explain a cute proof for some tiling problem, due to John Conway. The key idea is to reduce the problem to an instance of the Word Problem, a central problem in group theory. This will mainly serve as a pretext to introduce you to some combinatorial group theory, van Kampen's diagrams and some things we can do with them.
