Colloque de Physique - Prof. Karsten Kruse, University of Geneva

09.12.2024 12:30 – 14:00

On the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics
Prof. Karsten Kruse, Université de Genève

The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to John J. Hopfield for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks and to Geoffrey Hinton for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks. While the laudations emphasize the importance of the laureates' works for machine learning, at least Hopfield's work is deeply rooted in physics. In this seminar, I will describe his contribution in the context of spin systems and of earlier studies on neural networks. I will also describe briefly the contribution of Hinton and indicate the impact of the honored works on modern machine learning.
