The asymptotic variation of a 1-D diffeomorphisms and the growth of derivatives (Andrés Navas, Universidad de Santiago de Chile)

Since the work of Denjoy, it is known that in 1-D dynamics it is very important to look at the variation of the logarithm of the derivative in order to control the distortion under the dynamics. However, since this variation is subadditive, it is very natural to look at its stable version, namely the asymptotic growth of it under iteration. We call this number the asymptotic variation. We will discuss some of its basic properties, as well as several applications and possible extensions.
