Democratic representation theory for the mathematician (Geoffrey GRIMMETT, University of Cambridge)
15.05.2025 16:15
Mathematics illuminates democracy in a variety of ways, and the speaker will share his experiences in three areas. Firstly, the introduction of stochastics into apportionment systems. Secondly, the apportionment of the seats of the European Parliament between member states (in theory and practice). Thirdly, some mathematical aspects of voting in two-tier systems such as the EU Council. There are slight connections to percolation and the Ising model.
