Strengthening the Application of International Humanitarian Law to Guarantee Access to Healthcare

HNPW comes at a time when humanitarian action is facing major attacks and constraints. The many discussions that will take place there will be essential for rethinking our partnerships and imagining new forms of international solidarity.

Humanitarian law is no longer sufficiently respected in some conflict zones, which hinders access to healthcare and exacerbates mortality rates. It is crucial to better understand these dynamics in order to strengthen our mobilization. Geneva, as host of the Geneva Conventions, has a particular role to play in defending these fundamental rules of humanitarian law.

The GHF will make the defense of humanitarian law and access to healthcare in conflict zones a major focus of its work in 2026.
This session will be the first in a series of four events designed to provide a better understanding of the issues and to showcase ongoing initiatives, including:
• The Global Initiative to Galvanize Political Commitment to International Humanitarian Law (led by the International Committee of the Red Cross)
• RIAH – Researching the Impact of Attacks on Healthcare, which analyzes the consequences of attacks on health systems
• The CHH–Lancet Commission on Health, Conflict and Forced Displacement, which studies health systems and access to care in conflict and displacement contexts
