The growth of sparse curve systems (Jasmin Joerg, Bern)

26.03.2026 14:15

A system of simple closed curves on a given surface is called sparse if their average pairwise intersection number is at most one. In this talk, we will explore the maximal size of sparse curve systems, giving bounds on the growth in terms of the genus of the surface. We present a construction of large sparse curve systems using necklace-shaped surfaces. This is based on joint work with Sebastian Baader and Danica Kosanović.
