Viscera-brain coupling : influences on emotional processing - Pascal HOT

Viscera-brain coupling has emerged as a promising framework for understanding how internal bodily signals shape emotional and cognitive processes. This presentation will explore recent advances in the study of gastric-brain interactions, with a particular focus on their role in stress regulation, interoception, and emotional processing. Drawing on complementary electrophysiological, behavioral, and immersive virtual reality approaches, we will discuss how stomach-brain coupling can be investigated in both healthy individuals and clinical populations. Particular attention will be given to the development of innovative, non-invasive paradigms designed to manipulate and measure gastric perception, including synchronized sensory stimulation and virtual embodiment. These approaches open new opportunities to better characterize the dynamic dialogue between the viscera and the brain and to identify novel biomarkers of gut–brain functioning. We highlight the translational potential of viscera- brain coupling for understanding and eventually improving the assessment and treatment of disorders involving altered interoception and emotional regulation.
