Stefan problems and Schwarz Waveform Relaxation (Ronald D. Haynes)
13.10.2026 14:00 – 15:00
During the latter part of the 19th century Josef Stefan studied the problem of ice growth, motivated by empirical data collected during attempts to find the north-west passage - an arctic passage between Europe and Asia. Stefan formulated a model describing how water freezes and melts, and hence how the boundary between the water and ice moves with time. Theoretically and numerically, such “Stefan” problems have received much attention with work intensifying since the 1950s. In this work, I will discuss recent results which apply Schwarz waveform relaxation (SWR) to first, problems with prescribed time dependent domains, and second, to one-phase Stefan problems. If time permits, I will demonstrate a second analysis of SWR which harkens back to one of the first existence results for Stefan problem by Evans in 1951.
